Food Safety Alert: Hepatitis A Contamination in Frozen Blueberries

Albert Heijn has recalled its 1-kilogram bags of frozen blueberries after discovering they were contaminated with hepatitis A.

So far, 12 people have been diagnosed with the illness, two of whom required hospitalization. Public health authorities believe the actual number of cases could be much higher, as many people may not have reported their symptoms or linked their illness to the contaminated product.

The supermarket has received 10 illness reports from customers and over 2,000 inquiries about the recall. The affected blueberries, sourced from Poland, have been removed from shelves. Mixed fruit bags containing frozen blueberries remain safe, as they come from a different supplier.

Important for Aruba: These specific frozen blueberries are not sold in Aruba, but the situation is a reminder to always stay alert to food safety issues.

Hepatitis A is a serious virus that can cause symptoms like nausea, fatigue, abdominal pain, and jaundice. While many recover fully, severe cases may require medical attention. If you suspect exposure, consult a doctor immediately.

This incident highlights the need for stringent food safety measures and consumer awareness. Always check for recalls, return affected products, and follow safety guidelines to minimize risks. Food safety is a shared responsibility—let’s work together to protect public health!
